There are 39,916,800 distinct permutations of the eleven stock sounds in the classic Roland TR-909 from 1983. In this ongoing series of sound pieces, each one of those nearly 40 million patterns is given equal time and treatment. It’s not a selection of them, it’s a total exposure of the permutation space. But of course, to listen to the entire piece from start to finish would take too long. Over 39 million patterns, even at just one second each, would span nearly 2 years — without stopping. These numbers aren’t just big — they become existential, way beyond our attention threshold for music or sound. They take up very little space in the world. But the space of potential they contain — the number of ways they can be ordered, rearranged, transformed — is cosmically disproportionate to their material presence.
